BMW HVAC Blower

Why Should You Visit A&M Auto Service to Fix Your BMW’s HVAC Blower Failure

by Dutch Silverstein April 16, 2020

BMW’s provide their owners with exceptional cabin climate control, and you should expect nothing less from a top-of-the-line automobile. It’s the HVAC system that allows BMW’s to offer this kind of finely-tuned temperature control. So, when your HVAC’s blower fails, it is immediately noticeable. In this article, we’ll look at the reasons behind HVAC blower failure and what to do once you’ve diagnosed blower failure in your BMW.

Your HVAC System

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. The blower is the component of that system which physically moves warm or cool air through the vents and into the cabin. HVAC systems typically last anywhere between 10-15 years, but their life expectancy can vary largely depending on maintenance frequency and the physical demand placed on them.

BMW’s are slightly more susceptible to HVAC blower problems because of certain components in their design. If your BMW’s blower has failed, no air will be able to move through the vents, and precision temperature control will be impossible. While this may not seem like a big deal, blower failure can indicate electrical problems. It’s best to get your BMW inspected if you notice any irregularities with your HVAC system.

Causes of HVAC Failure

There are many reasons for an HVAC blower failure in your BMW. If the blower unit itself isn’t physically damaged and hasn’t been subjected to undue wear and tear, then the blower motor resistor could be to blame. The blower motor resistor is the electrical component of the HVAC. It indirectly controls the speed of the motor by supplying varying electrical current to the motor’s control module. Electrical problems can affect the resistor, and a blower failure could be a result of such issues. Alternatively, the blower motor itself might fail from excessive use. Below are the most common signs of a failing HVAC blower.

No air comes out of the vents

If your blower fails, it won’t be able to move any air through your BMW’s HVAC system, rendering both the heating and cooling systems useless. This type of blower failure is easy to identify. If you notice a lack of air flow from your vents or notice severely limited or diminished airflow, you should take your BMW into the shop immediately to have the problem diagnosed.

Unable to adjust airflow

If there is a resistor problem, it’s common for the HVAC blower to only run on one speed; generally high. This is a sign that the resistor has failed to supply alternating levels of current to the control module.

No temperature difference

If you can’t detect any difference in temperature between the heating and cooling systems, your BMW may have a freon leak. Freon is what cools the air for the AC, but if it leaks, it can block airflow through the entire HVAC system, affecting both heating and cooling processes.

Avoiding HVAC Blower Failure

The easiest way to make sure that your BMW’s HVAC blower remains operational and unimpeded is to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Consider more frequent checks if you happen to place undue strain on your HVAC system; for example, using it to combat extreme heat or cold.
