Types of Engine Misfires
The type of misfire your Audi experiences depends upon what has occurred inside the engine to prevent combustion from happening correctly. If one of the moving parts of the engine develops a problem, such as the pistons, then you’re Audi will experience a mechanical misfire. However, if the flow of air or fuel to the engine’s combustion chamber becomes inhibited, then a lean misfire will occur. Spark Plugs

Fuel Injectors
Fuel injectors are needed to distribute the precise amount of fuel needed to balance the amount of air entering the engine. However, over time, the injectors can get clogged up by the contaminants naturally present in the gas. While higher-quality gas tends to have less contaminants, no fuel is ever wholly free from sediment or microscopic debris. This is why maintaining the various filters inside your engine are important, as these can help trap the majority of contaminants that could reach the fuel injectors. However, given enough time and the failure of filters, the fuel injectors can become clogged. This negatively affects the amount of fuel that can enter the engine, throwing off the balance of air and fuel and causing lean misfires.
Head Gaskets
If your engine isn’t correctly maintained, or early warning signs have been ignored, a leaky head gasket may blow. In the early stages when leaks occur, the cylinders are not able to reach the maximum compression needed to pressurize the air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber for optimal ignition. This is an example of mechanical misfires. This can also contribute to general rough idling and reduced performance.
